Matt & Ben depicts its Hollywood golden boys – before J-Lo, before Gwyneth, before Project Greenlight, before Oscar… before anyone actually gave a damn. When the screenplay for Good Will Hunting drops mysteriously from the heavens, the boys realize they’re being tested by a Higher Power.
Creative Vision
Matt & Ben is the acclaimed comedy by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers that imagines a fictional origin story behind the Academy Award-winning screenplay Good Will Hunting. The production sought to celebrate friendship, ambition, and creative collaboration through an energetic, character-driven performance while providing emerging actors with the organizational support necessary to successfully realize their artistic vision.
OUR PARTNERSHIP
Studio On The Block joined the project as a collaborative producing partner, working alongside two graduating seniors of the University of Arkansas Department of Theatre to strengthen the operational foundation of the production from planning through execution. As part of the requested responsibilities, we helped to lead the artistic direction while keeping collaboration at the forefront. Additionally, we provided production consultation, project management support, scheduling strategy, logistical planning, and ongoing operational guidance while helping navigate the many moving parts required to mount an independent theatrical production. Throughout the collaboration, we worked closely with the artists, Beaux Jones and Maddie Frits, to anticipate challenges, coordinate production priorities, and establish workflows that supported efficient communication and decision-making. By providing strategic oversight behind the scenes, Studio On The Block helped create the structure necessary for the artists to remain focused on rehearsal, performance, and storytelling.
IMPACT
Our collaboration reinforced Studio On The Block's commitment to meeting artists wherever they are in the producing process. Whether serving as a lead producer or an operational consultant, we believe every successful production benefits from intentional planning, collaborative leadership, and a strong organizational framework. Matt & Ben demonstrated how targeted producing support can strengthen an existing creative team while preserving the artistic vision at the center of the work.
